FAQ
How much pool shock do I need for my pool?
The exact amount depends on your pool size, current chlorine level, and whether you’re doing a routine shock or treating algae.
Use our Pool Shock Calculator to get an exact dose based on your pool conditions. If you’re unsure of your pool size, start with our Pool Size Calculator to determine your total gallons.
What is calcium hypochlorite pool shock?
Calcium hypochlorite (cal hypo) is a fast-acting pool shock used to quickly raise chlorine levels, kill algae, and restore water clarity. Unlike stabilized chlorine, cal hypo does not add cyanuric acid (CYA), making it especially effective for pools that already have high stabilizer levels.
Does calcium hypochlorite add cyanuric acid (CYA)?
No. Cal hypo is an unstabilized chlorine, meaning it does not add cyanuric acid (CYA).
This makes it ideal for pools where CYA levels are already elevated, since too much stabilizer can reduce chlorine effectiveness, commonly referred to as chlorine lock.
When should I use pool shock instead of chlorine tablets?
Pool shock is best when you need a strong, immediate chlorine boost, such as clearing a green pool, removing contaminants, or recovering water after heavy use or storms.
Chlorine tablets are designed for slow, ongoing sanitation, while cal hypo shock is used to quickly restore proper chlorine levels and water clarity.
Why is my pool still green even when chlorine levels are high?
A pool can remain green even with high chlorine if algae is established, circulation is poor, or cyanuric acid (CYA) levels are too high and reducing chlorine effectiveness.
In these cases, a stronger shock treatment is usually required.
